PHASE ONE COMPLETED – KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR PART 2

True North Aid is working in partnership with Wabaseemoong Independent First Nations (Whitedog FN), Bimose Tribal Council Member First Nations, Ontario Provincial Police (S/Sgt Adam Illman), Canadian Pacific Railway, Sheraton Parkway Toronto North Hotel & Suites from across Ontario to provide furniture to First Nation communities in North Western Ontario for a suitable and comfortable living experience to families.

PROJECT OVERVIEW
Like so many basics in life “furniture” is a luxury item and a huge expense in some First Nations families. Having furniture; beds, tables, chairs and a desk will dramatically help the impoverished First Nation families and provide a better way of living and well-being. The furniture provided will provide for a suitable living and working space in homes.
Forty-six suites of furniture that include a queen size bed/headboard, mattress, dresser, nightstands and sitting chair with ottoman will be sent to First Nations People in Wabaseemoong Independent First Nations (Whitedog FN) and Bimose Tribal Council Member First Nations.

Wabaseemoong First Nations, Whitedog, ONT is a community of 1200 community members. The community is 120 kilometers from the city of Kenora. The community has 1 privately owned convenience store with gas bar. No fresh produce is carried. The community has a school from grades k-12 and has a community clinic. There are no long term economic development opportunities for the community other than the occasional work projects, ie: brush cutting, guiding, short term hydro work. There is 85% unemployment in the community and most are on social assistance.

The furniture is drastically needed because the band has recently built 3 multi complex units to alleviate the homelessness and over-crowding in the community. The tenants are all on social assistance and will not have additional funds to buy furniture for their homes.

The furniture will provide a sense of pride for the new home owners and their families which are mostly composed of small children.

True North Aid would like to thank the following supporters: Wabaseemoong Independent First Nations (Whitedog FN), Bimose Tribal Council Member First Nations, Ontario Provincial Police (S/Sgt Adam Illman), Canadian Pacific Railway, Sheraton Parkway Toronto North Hotel & Suites, from whom the furniture is being donated from.
